Milt told us a wonderful story regarding this species that illustrates the kind of gentle character that he had.. He was leading a group one day and there was this guy from Texas who kept bragging about how all the wildflowers in Texas were bigger than the ones he was seeing here. Finally Milt had had enough, and he told the group that they were going through an area that was rife with rattlesnakes so they had to keep looking down. Milt knew that up ahead there was a huge bush lupine about 10' tall. He practically led the guy right up to it before quietly remarking, "Now here's one of our lupines." He said the guy didn't say much after that. And yes, that picture at lower right is part of a bush lupine 'stem.' |
