Here are three examples of species whose common names include the word 'weed.' 'Weed' is a word that has no strict botanical meaning, Wikipedia says "A weed is a plant undesirable in a particular situation, a plant in the wrong place, or a plant growing where it is not wanted." Many people think that 'weeds' are plants that are not native, but that is far from the case. Other examples are alkali weed, butterweed, arrow-weed, sneezeweed, bindweed, rattleweed, snakeweed, matchweed, milkweed, chaffweed, chinchweed, locoweed, coastweed, deerweed, horseweed, cottonweed, silverweed, cudweed, pondweed, knotweed, doveweed, duckweed, fireweed, goldenweed, hawkweed, tarweed, matchweed, stinkweed, poverty weed, pickleweed, rattlesnake weed, seepweed, spikeweed, skeleton weed, mayweed, pygmy weed, smartweed, waterweed, and wireweed. These are all native species and are just ones from my website. No doubt there are a great many more in California. I honestly had no idea there were so many until I started looking them up. I think there is an unfortunate connotation to the addition of 'weed' to a name. It makes them seem somehow lesser than other non-'weed' plants and I wish there was something we could do about it.
