Although the name Harding is not part of the Latin name for this species, the fact that it is called Harding grass deserves some explanation. It is named after Richard Ross Harding (1848-1922) who promoted Harding grass as a cattle forage. He was from Great Marlow and was curator of the Queen's Park Reserve and Botanical Garden in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. He planted an avenue of laurel camphor trees in 1885 that runs north-south from Margaret Street to Campbell Street and is today called Harding Avenue. |
