[S.D. McKelvey in 1935 described Yucca brevifolia var. jaegeriana and L.D. Benson and R.A. Darrow in 1981 recognized it. Munz's Flora of Southern California included it, but the Jepson Manual 1st edition removed the variety. In a 2007 Aliso publication Lee Lenz raised Y. b. var. jaegeriana to full species status as Yucca jaegeriana, but JM2 continued with Yucca brevifolia with no varieties, a decision that Flora of North America apparently agrees with. There is some evidence that the differences between the eastern Mojave and western Mojave populations, mainly thinner and more intricately branched stems and flower morphology, warrant at least varietal status, but this remains up in the air.]
