LITTLE GREEN VALLEY, SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAINS

Thanks to a tip from John Marquis, I drove up into the San Bernardino Mts a few miles west of Big Bear Lake to hike the Little Green Valley Trail (2W10) that goes from CA-18 to some beautiful meadowy areas filled with corn lilies, lemon lilies, bog orchids, and many other wild-flowers. The trailhead is at an unmarked dirt parking lot on the north side of the highway just across from the Snow Valley Ski Area. It is approximately 1.5 miles to the meadow, and a local Green Valley website describes it as 'difficult,' which is completely untrue and unfortunate because many other websites repeat this same description. There is nothing difficult about it unless you happen to be hiking on crutches. Apparently there used to be a YMCA camp at this location, but the Forest Service has restored it to its original condition. People have asked me why I put pictures of the same species in different photo galleries, and my answer is that the purpose of these galleries is at least in part to document the flora of particular trails or other places, and so I include as many of the species as I was able to get good photographs of, even though they may grow in many other locations and appear in other galleries. An asterisk next to the common name indicates a non-native species, and a tilde (~) denotes a taxon for which my identification is uncertain.
