This is the large red ant called a red harvester which is very common in the mountains. I have been bitten by these guys now four times this year. This ant can both bite and sting and injects formic acid into the victim. It is incredibly painful and the pain lasts for hours. The genus is Pogonomyrmex in the family Formicidae. My recommendation is to watch where your're sitting down. |
