MT. BALDY, SAN GABRIEL MTS
JUNE 2008

Photographs by Michael Charters

This was an unfortunately timed excursion as it seemed that many of the things I was interested in either had not started blooming or were finished. The woolly mountain-parsley was already in fruit, the groundcone was finished, the Heuchera and Crepis hadn't started blooming, the Ribes and Arctostaphylos were pretty much over, the San Bernardino mountain onions and gray monardellas and alpine sulpher-flowered buckwheats were just beginning, and there was no sign of the showy cycladenia I saw two years ago. I'll go back in late July and check it out again, and next year I'll go in late May/early June to get the Oreonana and Boschniakia in better shape. An asterisk next to the common name indicates a non-native taxon.

There is some disagreement about who Pinus contorta ssp. murrayana is named for, some say Andrew Dickson Murray (1812-1878), Scottish lawyer, botanist, zoologist, entomologist and conifer expert, while others suggest John Archibald Murray (1779-1859), Scottish judge and Senator of the College of Justice. See my biographical entry here.
