[These pictures would seem to indicate more of a difference between these taxa than actually exists. They show one twig with a lot of long bristly hairs and another with nothing but short hairs. The problem is that there are individuals that have a few long hairs, so does one long hair or a half-dozen long hairs make it mollis or not? According to the Jepson Manual 2nd Ed., this is the only thing that differentiates these subspecies. But lest you think that the stones are not varied in shape, the picture in the first row of the stones of glandulosa ssp. mollis plants show considerable variety, with some stones being almost smooth and others where the endocarp segments are pronounced. The stones of glandulosa in particular are variably separable, with some stones completely fused into one unit and others coming apart into 1-2(4) segments. The stones of A. glandulosa are the most variable of the San Gabriel species of Arctostaphylos.]
