Samuel Bonsall Parish (1838-1928) and William Fletcher Parish (1840-1918) were both botanical collectors who lived on a ranch they bought in San Bernardino, California in 1872 and made many exploring trips through the mountains and deserts of the region. Samuel was the more devoted of the two and corresponded with and was on very familiar terms with many of the leading botanists of the day such as C. C. Parry, Asa Gray, Edward Lee Greene, John Gill Lemmon, Willis Jepson and C. G. Pringle. Both brothers served in the Union Army during the Civil War, Samuel having previously been a teacher, then spent time mining in Utah and Arizona, before settling in Southern California. Samuel was the author of A Catalog of Plants Collected in the Salton Sink, New or Little-Known Plants of Southern California, A Contribution Toward a Knowledge of the Genus Washingtonia, A Group of Western American Solanums, Plant Ecology and Floristics of Salton Sink, and Trees of Southern California. Plants with the epithet parishii were named mostly either for both brothers as co-collectors or for Samuel, but at least two were named for William.
