William Henry Brewer was an American botanist who attended and studied soil chemistry at Yale. After teaching at the Ovid Academy in Ovid, New York, he went tp Europe for several years where he studied natural science in Heidelberg, organic chemistry in Munich, and chemistry in Paris. Upon returning to the U.S. he became a professor of chemistry at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. Two years later he was appointed as chief botanist of the California Division of Mines and Geology and worked on the first California Geological Survey, following which he became Chair of Agriculture at the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale during which time he participated in a survey of Greenland and Edward Harriman's maritime expedition to explore the coast of Alaska. |
