POOPOUT HILL TO MT. SAN GORGONIO SUMMIT
SEPTEMBER 2008

He who has not ascended Grayback [San Gorgonio] is like a savage who listens to the tuning up
of an orchestra and goes off pleased - thinking he has heard the concert.
Theodore S. Van Dyke 1875

Our route for this 20-mile hike was from Poopout Hill to Dry Lake to Mineshaft Saddle to the summit of Mt. San Gorgonio at 11,499', then around the backside of Jepson Peak to Dry Lake View and Dollar Lake Saddle, and finally back to South Fork and Poopout Hill. It was a gloriously beautiful fall day with a cloudless sky, cool breezes and temperatures around 75°. I knew there were species that grow only around the summit area, and although I didn't expect to find any blooming in September, I had a bit of luck. We did see a lot of mountain heather in what is its only Southern California location, but it was past its bloom. I will return next year earlier in the season. An upside-down V next to the common name indicates a taxon that was new to me when I photographed it on this field trip.
