SAWMILL MOUNTAIN, SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS
MAY 2009 PAGE ONE
Photographs by Michael Charters

Although very close to Liebre Mountain, the trail up Sawmill Mountain from Pine Canyon Road is mostly a very different environment, much more heavily forested and following a seasonal stream that was still trickling intermittently at this late date in May. The trail goes from Lower Shake Campground, which is a brief walk along a dirt road from N2 at the 4.54 mile marker, 0.6 miles to Upper Shake Campground, and then another 0.6 miles to the Pacific Crest Trail. Jerry Schad's direction to "walk through the campground" was not very helpful and I was not sure I was going where I was supposed to go, and I also didn't know whether this was intended to be a loop trail or not or where the end point of this hike was supposed to be or where the actual high point of Sawmill Mountain is, so this became a sort of general aimless wandering around looking to see what I could find, which is less than completely satisfying if like me you're a person who likes to get to a specific destination. Anyway, I did find some interesting things, and I will go back again and check out the area further, perhaps earlier in the spring next year, but first I need to get a good map. An upside-down V next to the common name indicates a taxon that was new to me when I photographed it on this field trip.
