One of the easiest ways to distinguish between Brassica nigra (R) and Hirschfeldia incana (L) is the roughness or hairiness of the stem. Another discriminant is the overall height of the plant (4-8' for Brassica and 2-4' for Hirschfeldia). A third is whether the majority of leaves are cauline (Brassica) or basal (Hirschfeldia).
