California condors are one of the largest birds in the world and one of the longest-living, with a life-span of up to 60 years. In 1987 the 22 birds left in the wild were brought into captivity for breeding, and reintroductions to the wild began in 1991. As of June 2014 there were 439 birds living wild or in captivity. They fly at speeds of up to 55 mph and to heights of 15,000', and often range 150 miles a day.
