"An accident claimed the life of John Maitland Grant, a close friend of J.D. Logan's. Grant was district engineer to the Cape Colony Railways and managed the line from Worcester to Beaufort West. He was accustomed to travelling in his own coach and it was on the fateful day of April the 24th 1891 [although the grave inscription says 1894], that his coach was involved in a collision with a railway truck. Grant was killed instantly. His impressive tomb is to be seen at a little cemetery at Pieter Meintjies [the 2nd smaller monument]. This was a particularly appropriate site for his burial, not only on account of his association with the local railway line, but furthermore because of railwaymen who had died during the construction of the line northwards from Touws River." (James Douglas) Logan founded the nearby "town" of Matjiesfontein in 1884, site of the venerable Lord Milner Hotel where I stayed twice.
