The Lauraceae or laurel family is a group almost entirely composed of shrubs and trees with simple leaves usually punctate and strongly-scented. Rather than petals and sepals, laurel flowers have sepaloid tepals in 2 whorls of 3 each. The fruit is a berry or drupe. This family contains 30- 50 genera and about 2000 species that are widespread and common in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. A few genera extend into temperate areas such as sassafras, spicebush and bay- laurel in the U.S. They are particularly common in Brazil and southeast Asia. Cinnamon, bay leaves, avocados and camphor are a few of the products pro- duced by laurel family members, as well as the flavoring sassafras which has been used widely in herbal teas. Perfumes have been made from the oils contained in laurel leaves, and many of the trees are considered as valuable timber woods. |
